One of the joys of going back to work after a short break for say, child care or other caring responsibilities, is the chance to really settle into a long term career for quite a few years that remain. When we first leave school and […]
When I was away on a holiday recently, I had the chance to attend what were called enrichment lectures. Very interesting they were too. I learned lots about Admiral Nelson and various other admdirals and sea captains. I also learned a great deal about the […]

I was watching a couple of those wonderful home and property programmes on a daytime lifestyle tv channel. I had been looking for a particular online training course for pilates but got side tracked. It’s incredible how many of my pals watch this sort of […]
I well rememeber when at school we had to choose between history and geography and later, between sciences and the commercial subjects. It seemed jolly hard to choose the first ones. I loved both history and geography and have since growing up and being out […]
Just at the moment many of us over 65 year olds will be remembering back 50 years to the most exciting thing that could possibly have happened in this world. No, not the introduction of social media and f b posts; not the Spice girls lining up on stage or even the Beatles – but that last one does run very close for me. . . . . No, the things that still sends shivers down my spine certainly is remembering the Moon landings. The US sent up their rockes and we watched in the greatest of excitment, fear, incredulity as these grainy pictures emerged. I was at school – the head teacher gathered everyone into the Hall to watch on a huge projector screen. Students today, so used to invention after invention and space exploration almost an every day thing, cannot imagine how incredible that landing was. The names of the astronauts have gone down in history and their stories oft repeated. Because I heard them myself on radio, tv and read them in print at the time, I believe! Recent mentions of the event have sparked great interest in the subject of space and aeronautics. A local college has an article about their students taking up far more science, engineering and technology courses. This bodes so well for the next generation of outer explorers.
I was happily meandering through a very historic village that’s quite near me, on a walk with some pals. We were chatting away and very nearly had an embarrassing mishap by almost bumping into and knocking over a lady who was sat in the middle […]
Knowing our Ps and Qs . . . . . . a strange phrase which doesn’t actually seem to have a difinitive explanation but generally is taken to mean watching one’s language when out socialising and with family. This is all part of the rich […]
There really isn’t anything better than being amongst friends and colleagues when there are training courses to be undertaken. I remember the days of moving en-masse from our usual office block in town, to another one miles off, with all the time, cost and mayhem that incurred! The training courses themselves could usually be contained within half the allotted time, if only all the participants could get their act together, stop chit-chatting and just concentrate on the job. But with much of this, came the element of ‘it’s ok, only training – a good day out’. These days I’m pleased that so much training is classed as mandatory to go towards one’s personal career development. This is now the only way of achieving better grades of pay and benefits. Online e-education courses and additonal home study can bring much greater rewards and the more dedicated candidate can really improve their job satisfaction and company worthiness from taking on board the wide choice available.
We of a certain age are very familiar with the old style classroom scenario – teacher up the front of the class, chalk in hand and chalk board rubber in the other. One particular one was really excellent at writing behind her with her right […]
